Happy Memorial Day

We spent a long weekend at the lake.  It was a pleasant weekend full of boat rides, fishing, kayaking, and family fun.  We got our annual "lake picture".  This is another tradition that started by accident!  The first summer that we were at the lake house, I snapped a picture of JM and 3 of the kids just sitting on the deck.  It is one of my favorites, so each year we pose for it again.  Quite easy since we are not trying to get smiles!!! We usually take it on Father's Day, but we are not coming to the lake this year on Father's Day.
We were actually home on Memorial Day since JM had to work.  JM grilled hot dogs by the pool, and Lauren made patriotic brownies for a special treat!
My beautiful, patriotic kids are growing up TOO fast!

Strawberry Picking

The last time we picked strawberries was in Maryland in 2004!  When a friend of mine mentioned that her brother had a pick-ur-own farm in Wetumpka, I decided that we had to find time to go!  Colleen and Lyndsey have never picked strawberries, and Corynne and Lauren don't remember picking in Maryland!

We had so much fun eating and picking!  The berries were so delicious!  I had big plans of making jam after we got home from the weekend at the lake, but we were down to I full basket by Monday morning.  Corynne froze half the remaining basket for shakes, and we ate the rest!  They were melt-in-your-mouth can't-eat-just-one good!!!!

Learning About Josefina's World

The girls began reading the America Girl Box Set for Josefina a few weeks ago.  Since these books are way above Lyndsey's reading level, Lauren does not comprehend as well when she is reading, and my voice only lasts so long; I purchased the audio version so they can just follow along in the books.  Lauren was responsible for questions at the end of each chapter that I pulled from a Literature Study of Josefina that I found on Currclick.com.  They both took sets on bookadventure.com for the 2 books that were online.  They enjoyed playing with the paper doll set that I had purchased during the summer and acting out each of the chapters!
We did a few art projects to go along with our study of Josefina's World.  The first was building a pueblo from adobe.  The girls learned a lot of vocabulary for this American Girl Study!!!
Crayola Air Dry Clay is so fun the build with!!
I found the American Girl Memory Box craft kit at Michael's and online for them to paint.
"Papa had given her a little wooden box of Mama's. Josefina called it her memory box because in it she kept small things that reminded her of Mama, such as a piece of Mama's favorite lavendar-scented soap."

The girls each made a lapbook using mini foldables that they had made while reading each book.  Most of the foldables were from homeschoolshare.com and the literature study that I had purchased at Currclick.com.

Lauren talked me into having another American Girl party like we had for Felicity at Christmas.  Really, she did not have to whine much because I love to plan a kid party!!!!

Fiesta Time
The girls helped with some of the "authentic" food as part of their history lesson.  They mixed and baked the Bizcochitos, spicy sugar cookies,  just like Josefina had in the books!  We found the recipe in Josefina's Cook Book.

They also made Empanaditas  We made Apple instead of Pumpkin like the Josefina Cook Book suggested.  We could not keep Colleen out of the dough!  She even made an Apple Empanaditas for herself!
We added a few food things that would remind us of some of the stories we read.
"Then everything happened so fast it was a blur. The snake gave a menacing rattle. Mariana threw the rock at it and missed. The snake whipped its head around, shot forward, and struck Mariana on the arm with its fangs."
"Esteban and Mariana brought a wonderful gift. It was a melon that had been buried in sand since last fall's harvest to keep it fresh.  When Josefina thanked her, Mariana said, "It's not much, but my heart goes with it."

I made the purse cake.  It is not my idea AT ALL!  I found the idea on Pinterest!

"She walked across, picked the primroses, and tucked the stems in her pouch. She let the yellow flowers stick out so that they wouldn't be crushed."

The house is all decorated, and the girls are dressed.  Corynne even made a welcome sign for the party.
The food bar of tacos, quesadillas, and nachos is ready.
The Mexican Hot Chocolate is ready.
And the friends are here to eat...

 Paint pottery...

 Make bracelets with turquoise beads...
 Eat a yummy cake...
And play games that Josefina and her friends used to play.  This game is called The Rainbow.

AMTA & Piano Recital

AMTA
On April 6th, Lauren competed in the District AMTA competition in Auburn.  We had a very rushed morning because she had a group dance competition in Clanton that morning.  Clanton and Auburn are about 1.5 hours apart!  When she danced in her last dance at the competition, we literally threw everything in the car and she changed on the way.
She played very good at the competition, and she scored Double 0 which would have qualified her for state if she was 10 (missed it by a few days)!

Year End Recital
This evening we attended her year end recital at the music shop where she takes lessons from Mrs. Gloria Bryant.  I think this is Lauren's 5th recital.  This year she played 3 songs.

A Merry March by Gurlitt
Painting With Pastels by Faber
The Bubble by Faber
Lauren received her certificate, ribbon, and trophy for competing in the AMTA.

State-by-State: West Virginia

The goal this year was to "discover" 25 states in the Discover America State-by-State series.  We have reached #20, the end of the school year, and one very tired mom!
"M may appear like Mountains---
peaks reaching for the sky.
Our nickname is the Mountain State.
It's easy to see why."
-M is for Mountain State: A West Virginia Alphabet

If you do an internet search for the food that West Virginia is famous for, Pepperoni Rolls will come up!  The pepperoni roll is an unexpected little West Virginia specialty that was reportedly invented in Fairmont in 1927, and was often used as a miner's lunch in early days.
Instead of cutting our pepperoni roll into "squares" to bake at this point, we bent the roll to form a snake because we had just read:

"Then everything happened so fast it was a blur. The snake gave a menacing rattle. Mariana threw the rock at it and missed. The snake whipped its head around, shot forward, and struck Mariana on the arm with its fangs."

May Field Trips

We began winding down our school year after we got back from Tyler's state tennis tournament.  It is hot and Mama is tired!  The girls had basically finished a few of their subjects-history, science, math, grammar & spelling.  Instead of trying to cram in another history unit (The Early 19th century),  I decided to move on to Meet Josefina.  We used the extra time for Lauren to work on end-of-year exams in Math & History that I pulled off the internet.  Lyndsey and I worked on catching up on Reading lessons.  Seriously, she really did not need to "catch up" but more like just finish the first grade book.  She is in Kindergarten!  She will be ready to start next school year with the 2nd grade reader.

To fill the rest of our time, I signed up for many of the homeschool group field trips that were being offered.  Our first stop was Tucker Pecan on May 9th.  We learned many pecan facts, and we learned how the cracking & shelling machines worked.
The girls with 2 different kinds of scales...

....yep, I bet that is a Kindergarten math lesson in some book!
The girls had a great time at the tour.  Oh, yes, we eat many samples of the spiced and flavored pecans. I bet that is a Kindergarten/Pre-School Senses activity!  Homeschool without the books is so much fun!
After the tour, we went to the other side of town just to ride the Trolley.  Why?  Why not?!?!
We listened to half of the Montgomery History while riding the trolley.  (Note to self...need to do this again while we study Alabama History!)
We jumped off the trolley at a local hotdog joint that is a Montgomery Legend!  Chris' Hotdogs...
Dad met us there with Colleen for lunch.  Yummy!
On May 14th, we joined the homeschool group again at Earth Fair.
The girls followed the Community Outreach Lady around the store and learned why certain things make the shelves at Earth Fair.
There was plenty of sampling of the organic foods...
Someone did not like dried okra.  I did like it!

We ground our own peanut butter with chocolate...yummy!  It did not last long at our house--maybe an hour once the older kids got home!
Our snack purchases...
