Day of Colleen

While the girls where at Space Camp and Tyler was at school Friday, Colleen and I had a special day. She waited patiently while I did a clean up through every kid bedroom in the house.  WOW!  These kids accumulate a lot of trash in there rooms.  Colleen's room took a little extra time because she had dumped just about everything in her room!
 Then we ran a few errands, ate lunch at Subway per her request, and then to the nail salon!  This was also her one request for the day!  She wanted to go have her nails done at the salon!  How could I turn that down?!  She had so much fun, and she was so proud to show them off to anybody who would listen and look!

Homeschool: Week #6 and What is Working for us!

I posted our Curriculum for 2014-2015 back at the beginning of the summer, but I just wanted to update and share a few things since we have been back at school for 6 weeks now.

::::Spelling and Reading for Lyndsey::::
This year I am using All About Spelling and All About Reading with Lyndsey.  I let her phonics lessons slide the second semester of last year just because we did not really like the level 3 of Sing, Spell, Read and Write.  I could definitely tell by May that we HAD to get back on track for this year!
I started her in level 2 on spelling and level 3 on reading.  It has been an easy adjustment other than she had never learned how to label syllables or an actual list of Silent E rules.  We spent a few weeks just covering those basics to catch her up.  She loves the reader, and the stories are fun to listen too!  We try to cover a lesson a week which is 2-3 days of material.  I hope we can speed this up as she adjusts to the schedule and other new subjects!

 ::::Geography::::
This year we are covering world geography with the Trail Guide to World Geography.  The girls are enjoying the daily questions and looking up answers in the atlas.  We are labeling a lot of maps and reviewing a lot of basic geography terms along the way.  We are studying the continent of North America right now.  The girls have learned all the provinces and territories of Canada as well as the Great Lakes and United States (from last year).  They had fun using Shephardsoftware.com to learn and review the provinces of Canada!
Lyndsey chose Canada for her geography fair project for the end of September.  The girls worked through a Webquest to discover interesting facts about Canada this week.  They had fun looking through JM & Corynne's coin collection from their trip to Canada last October.
We were able to participate with our homeschool group on a geography Mystery Skype with another classroom in the United States.  I am so glad that our group sets up these skypes.  It is a great way to focus in on solving geography clues to determine where the class is skyping with us is from!

::::Music::::
We love our new music history curriculum! I hope to post more on the unit on Bach that we just completed very soon!

The girls are also continuing their piano lessons with a friend of mine this year.  She comes to our house on Thursday mornings and gives the girls lessons!
The girls started working on Flashnote Derby and Noteable iPad apps this summer to work on musical note memorization.  I think it is helping them!

                                                                    ::::Latin::::
We have started Prima Latina again this year.  We are in Lesson 4 which is still a review from last year when we completed through Lesson 5 (sad)!  This year is going so much better!  I bought the DVDs, and the girls and I watch the DVD on Monday morning.  Then we do the workbook pages together.  I have set up the vocabulary (and other information) on Quizlet for each Lesson.  Everyday they login to Quizlet to review the vocabulary.  On thursday or Friday morning, they take a little vocab quiz just to make sure everyone is on the same page!

:::::Science:::::
For this first semester we are studying Astronomy.  I ordered the Focus on Elementary Astronomy  for Lyndsey and the Focus on Middle School Astronomy for Lauren.  I am really not pleased with these books. We are just using the middle school version because the elementary is just to easy for Lyndsey.  I am basically using the books as a guide, and I am pulling much more information from internet homeschool sources.  It is taking a lot more planning time than I wanted to spend, so I will be looking for a different curriculum for our Chemistry & Geology studies later in the year.

As for the topic of Astronomy, we are loving it!  We have done many projects already.  I am putting together an Astronomy post for the blog to document our fun!  Best of all, the girls left for Space Camp at the Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama, today with JM.  I know they are having a BLAST!!!

:::::History:::::
We are loving Mystery of History Volume 2!  We listen to the CDs for the reading.  This is a nice reading break for me!!!  After the reading, we fill out the notebooking pages to review the material. We are also putting together a timeline and lapbook as we go through the lessons.  We cover 3 lessons each week.  Then I choose one of the extra activities each week for the girls to do.  I like how some of the extra activities use geography/mapping skills and artistic skills.  In the picture below the girls are free hand cutting on the island of Patmos where John was exiled and wrote the book of Revelations.

:::::Art:::::
I am working on individual posts for each of the artists we are studying with Meet the Masters.  Each lesson is very interesting and the projects create art work based on one of the artist's original pieces.  We just finished Van Gogh's Starry Night last week.

Starting next Friday, the girls will also be taking a lesson from an Abrakadoodle instructor.  The lesson will focus more on the artist we are studying.  We are all very excited about this class with other homeschoolers!

::::Extras::::
We are continuing to use AlwaysIceCream.com for basic skill reviews and typing.  I really never have to ask them to do this because it is so much fun!
Xtramath.com is a flash card game on the computer that they both work on every morning.  They work on math fact mastery and speed.

Another homeschool mom is leading a K-nex Bridge building class this year.  During the first class, the kids focused on learning the terminology and working together to build bridges using limited resources.  This class is going to be a fun class to apply a few engineering and scientific skills!

ASF: Behind the Scenes

Today we went on a behind-the-scenes tour of Alabama Shakespeare Festival Theatre.  We were taken from the lobby to the club room to the props and construction area to the costume department.  The costume department was by far the funnest area.  Who would not like to play dress up in this room?!!  This was a fun afternoon with a great group of kids!

National Banana Split Day

On the way home from dropping off the volleyball practice carpool today, I heard on the radio that it was National Banana Split Day.  I decided to stop by the store and pick up so fresh bananas, strawberries in syrup, and whipped cream to surprise the kids!
They all had a great time making their creations!  After I posted to Facebook, JM was a little jealous that he was missing out!  He did make one for himself when he finally got home at 10:45pm!
YUMMY, YUM, YUM, YUM!!!!!!!!!!
Sometimes Mondays are worth celebrating!

Southern Trauma at the DragonBoats

This is the 3rd year JM has sponsored a Dragon Boat team for the Trauma Department.  It is always a hot, fun day down on the river.  This year Tyler raced with the crew again.  Lauren and Lyndsey enjoyed being down on the river with the team while I was with Corynne at a volleyball tournament.

Warrior JV Volleyball 2014

Corynne is the co-captain of the JV volleyball team this year.  The team is off to a great start with Coach Keith Higginbotham.  Corynne is a fighter on the court!  She sticks up for her team and is very encouraging!  It is going to be a fun season!

Super Space Saturday

My kids would say one of the disadvantages of homeschooling is sometimes we school on Saturday!  Forget the fact that we took Friday off!  Mom declared it Super Space Saturday this afternoon, and we worked on a bunch of space projects!

Project #1 (This was actually build during the week.)  A working telescope from a Space Exploration kit that I found online.
Project #2 We started making the space theme items using Hama beads (just like Perler beads).  The girls will complete a bead model of each of the planets as we study them individually!
Project #3 was also completed during the week.  This was our edible model of the parts of the Earth.  Inner Core, Outer Core, Crust, and Mantle
Project #4 was completed as we studied the Moon Phases over the past week.
Project #5 Of course we had to do the edible Moon Phases with Oreos!!!
Project #6 - Now these are actually the projects we completed during Super Space Saturday!  We started with these supplies to make our Mars Rover.
It turned out pretty cool.  It only worked for a few minutes, and I gave up trying to get it to work again.  I think the box was to heavy.  Next time we try this project, i will find the lightest weight box possible!
Project # 7 Next, the girls assembled a Constellation Projector.  They loved taking it to the closet and inviting people in to look at the Constellations!
All-in-all, Super Space Saturday was a success.  They were not to upset about doing school work!!

Letter J

We learned about Letter J this week at Mommy Preschool.  Colleen enjoyed a few new fun games this week.  Cutting and pasting are becoming easier and easier!  She has no problem picking out the picture that does not belong with the sound of the week.
We have a new letter match game for the fall.  Aren't these acorns cute!!  I am sure I found this on Pinterest--my go-to for everything!
We counted jewels, talked about Jesus, and made a jacket of letter J pictures.
Of course, we had jelly beans to sort and EAT!  This has been a fun week!

Summer Reading

This summer we read a few books just for fun (haha)!   The girls and I read Swiss Family Robinson together, and they worked through the foldables from Confessions of a Homeschooler's Literature pack.  The end result was a beautiful lapbook that recalls the entire story.  After we finished the book, we had a family movie night and watched the Disney movie.  The girls enjoyed picking out the similarities and differences.
The Swiss Family Robinson (Classic Starts version)
Family movie night                            July 20th
Next the girls read On the Banks of Plum Creek.  The girls listened to this book on CD and tested their comprehension using Pockets of Time from Fortunately For You.  Then the girls attended a homeschool book club where they discussed the book and completed a craft project.

First Days of School

It is hard to believe that it is time to send the kids back to school.  The summer has flown by so fast! Tyler started his Junior year (gasp!!!) on August 7th.  My young man drove himself to his first day of school.  We are so proud of the young man he is becoming.
Corynne started her Freshman year at ECS today.  My first princess is a freshman this is almost harder to bear than the junior status!  Corynne's freshman year also means we are starting our 10th year here in Alabama!
Corynne posed with the homeschool girls for a few pictures before I took her to school this morning. Tyler had already left for school because Corynne had a late first day start time!

 Homeschool actually started 4 weeks ago but we never took 1st day of school pictures!  Lauren is working on 6th grade, Lyndsey is in 2nd grade, and Colleen is in Pre-K 4 this year.
Aren't they just beautiful!!!!
OK, Mom.  We are done with the pictures.
Colleen is going to a Mother's Day Out one morning a week at ECS (Corynne's school).  This gives her a little "classroom" time, and it gives us a focused 3 hours of intense homeschooling!
She had a fun first day on August 14th!  Dad took her to school and picked her up!  He even took her for a lunch date to Schlotzsky's were she inhaled a whole pizza, chips and a coke!  This playing apparently requires a lot of fuel!!!

Letter I

This week is brought to you by the Letter Ii!  We have had a fun week with I-I-I for igloo and ice cream!  Hmmmm....wonder what we had for a snack one day????  This week we did a little counting, painting, cutting, and sequencing.
