Barracuda Swim Banquet

Tonight we drove back from the State Tennis Tournament in Mobile to go to a Barracuda Swim Team Banquet.  The girls have had a great time swimming for the Barracudas this year, and they have improved so much!

The coaches presented each swimmer with a Barracuda patch and T-shirt!

Then the coaches presented a few special awards.  Lyndsey was chosen to receive the Bronze Sportsmanship Award!  What an awesome year!!!

TPS Tennis

One of my favorite passtimes is watching this young man play tennis.  That says a lot since I don't like to be outside and HOT!  Even on his worst day and there are bad days,  I think he plays an awesome game!  Playing on the Varsity Tennis Team at Trinity is his favorite time of the year.  He was quite disappointed to be playing number 5 this year, but he decided to make the best of the year!  For that,  I am so proud!
This year, coach paired him with Will for doubles.  WHAT?!?!  Has coach lost his mind pairing these two hot tempered boys together?!?!
Well, they definitely proved the doubters wrong.  They played together quite well.  Yes, they lost their tempers at each other.  They pounded each other with balls and said things to each other that I was not happy about, but they left it all on the court.  They walked away with a win 9 out of 10 times!
They crack me up!!  These boys are TPS future #1 & #2.  Now which one will be #1 is up in the air because that will be a SHOW DOWN next February!!
TPS qualified for state again this year, and we hosted the Annual Steak State Send-off Dinner at our house.  The boys played a bracket of ping-pong while JM cooked the steaks.  Then, coach gave a pep talk to the boys!
State was not so nice to our boys at the end, but they walked away with 2nd Place!!! Yeah, TPS Tennis!!!  What a great year with an awesome group of boys!!!

State-by-State: Ohio

"B is for Buckeye,
Ohio's nickname and tree.
Its nut looks like a deer's eye,
early pioneers would all agree."
~ B is for Buckeye: An Ohio Alphabet

The girls decided to make Buckeyes for the state of Ohio.  Did you really think they would choose something different?!!!

While they were at dance this evening, I made an extra Ohio dish.  Tonight we had Cincinnati Chili which is a sweet Chili served 1-5 ways!  Is was kinda weird to us Texans to "mess up" our chili, but it was good!

Cincinnati Chili

Serving Suggestions:

2 Way
Cincinnati Chili served over spaghetti.
3 Way
Cincinnati Chili served over spaghetti and topped with mild cheddar cheese.
4 Way
Add onions or red beans to the 3 Way.

ECS has a new team to cheer for this year

This was the innagrual tennis session for Eastwood Christian School.  We only made a girls varsity team this year, but you have to start somewhere!  John Mark was the head coach, and he had a wonderful, entertaining assistant, Mr. Tony!!  Mr. Tony led most of the practices for us.  John Mark could not have lead the team without Mr. Tony because there was no way JM could get off work EVERY day during tennis season!!!  The team went 1-8 for the year, but they fought for every match!  We even had 3 girls qualify for the state tournament!!  Corynne played #6 on the team officially, but she was able to play a few matches at #4.  She and Kelly Trumbul played #2 doubles and won quite a few matches for the team.
We hosted the first ECS tennis banquet for the families at our house.  The girls each received an ECS Letter award for playing on Varsity this year and well as a team T-shirt designed by JM with their names on the back.  It was a GREAT season, and we are looking forward to fine tuning the program for next year.

Colonial History Projects & Lapbook

Our next history unit for Homeschool in the Woods was Colonial Life.  We are enjoyed this hands on approach to American History.  It is hard to find the extra time to complete all the projects, but the projects bring the story to life.  I hope the girls will remember more this way!

We started off our Colonial Life unit with an excavation activity because that is how people have learned about the past!
Lauren kept a log of what was discovered in each layer of the soil.
Corynne helped us build our Jamestown fort since she had built one years ago in 5th grade!
The girls also completed a mini-lapbook about Jamestown.
Another project that the girls worked on was weaving a bed.  They started with stringing the bed frame.  Then then stuffed a pillow mattress and used their sewing skills to close the top.

Finally, they each weaved a cover for the bed.  This was a popular craft because they have been weave covers and rugs for their American Girls ever since I taught them how to make the bed cover!
Corynne helped with another Colonial craft.  They carved faces in apples.  After the apples dried, they decorated the "old, wrinkly skinned" people!
We also had a few cross-stitch lessons.  The girls completed the Felicity heart pillow craft kit.
We made punch tin candle holders...
After talking about crimes and punishments, the girls completed a tar-and-feather picture for their notebooks.
While reading the lessons, Lauren and Lyndsey did little foldables to emphasize important dates, people, and ways of life in the Colonial time.  They ended up with quite a collection for their lapbook.
Putting together the lapbook and reviewing all the material is definitely a fun project that takes a couple of days (or a long night)!
View #2 with "BEES" page flipped down.
The bottom pocket if full of coloring sheets, diagrams of a plantation and a colonial house, a colonial cookbook, a daily life storybook, and some Felicity information.  The Clothing of the Colonists was a fun activity.  The girls put the different layers of clothes on transparencies, so you can lift off each layer to see the next.  We also pulled a lot of Reformation information into this unit.  We delved deep into Martin Luther, John Calvin, and many other Reformist because church reform/freedom was the primary reason people came to the New World.
The girls filled these lapbooks so full that I almost could not get them to close.  Actually, they sat under a heavy pile of books for weeks so that they would stay closed!

State-by-State: Tennessee

"V is for Volunteer.
It's important for you to know
when help is needed anywhere,
Tennesseans are sure to go."

State-by-State: Kentucky

"B is for Bluegrass,
across broad fields it's seen
and though it looks the color blue
up close the grass is green."

The girls read B is for Bluegrass: A Kentucky Alphabet and completed their scrapbook pages.

Surprise! We went all Original for our cooking this week!  How could we choose anything but KFC!!! Actually, the girls have been wanting to go to KFC for years, and I have said NO!!!

Honestly, they were not too impressed so I don't think they will be begging to go anytime soon!
